You’ll Never Guess Who’s Watching | To The Church

Every morning I leave out around the same time for work. I catch the 7:47 bus (which is ALWAYS late and is really more like the 7:55 bus) and then I transfer to the train anywhere between 8 and 8:15.

On my way I usually see others on their way to work as well. I’ve found myself looking for certain individuals, I guess as a marker for my own tardiness and simply out of familiarity. This morning, like every morning, right after I swiped my metro card for my transfer, a familiar face, one I’ve regularly sought in my morning commute, approached me and said good morning. She proceeded to tell me how she looks for me everyday. She went on to say how she enjoys seeing me and observing how I carry myself because I remind her of her daughters. She said she watches with admiration as I travel to work each morning like a woman, making her way through life.

It touched me to know that just as I’ve found comfort in the routine of seeing certain faces, someone else was feeling the same about seeing me. What really touched me was how it wasn’t just the familiarity in seeing me each day but also in the way that she sees me carrying myself.

Our conversation ended with her telling me that she’s retiring today and that she’ll miss seeing me. We laughed and chatted a bit longer and said how we hope to see one another in the neighborhood. That conversation moved me in a different way today because it taught me that as we go through this life as the people of God we may never know who’s really watching us.

I believe many people think that ministry is on Sunday’s within the four walls of the church when in all actuality ministry is 247/365. Every place you go physically, verbally, and even virtually we are being watched.

Scripture says,

“Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:1-3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I’m learning that there is no need to scream my faith and belief in Christ from the mountain tops if my everyday life reflects Him.

My interaction today was not a surprise as I’ve had several instances like it before but more of a reminder to live what I believe. Speaking with my mouth alone the word of God is but one aspect of our witness. Living out the word of God is my faith in action.

Share with me some unconventional ways and places you share your faith by leaving a comment below.
